George Ely Massey, age 89 of Joplin, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin.
George was born December 25, 1924 to the late Washington "Van" Buren and Eliza Cordilia "Cordi" Peterson Massey in Falcon, Missouri. George was a veteran serving during WWII in Italy with the United States Army. George retired from KOAM-TV working through many positions from News Anchor to the Sales Department. He loved to garden and plant trees, especially after the Joplin tornado. George was involved in many clubs such as the Sheffendecker Golf Club, Metal Detector Club, a member of the Pittsburg Masonic Lodge #187 and former president of the Joplin Humane Society. He also cherished his precious cat, "KK".
On July 22, 1949, George married the beautiful, Geraldine "Jerry" Gordon in Springfield, Missouri. She survives of the home after being married nearly 65 years.
Additional survivors include two sisters, Neva Myers of Lebanon, Missouri; Cleo Candler of Lebanon, Missouri; brother, Don Massey of Independence, Missouri; special sister in-law, Lou Nan Reed and husband Wally of Glendale, Arizona; 9 nephews, 10 nieces.
George is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Shermon Massey and a sister, Bernice Heafley.
Graveside services are planned for Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at New Home Cemetery in Falcon, Missouri. Family will receive friends at the mortuary on Monday, July 7, 2014 from 6 to 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Joplin Humane Society in care of the mortuary.
Services are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
