Gary Compton

Gary A. Compton, age 71, lifelong resident of Joplin, passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at his home with family at his side.

Gary was born March 15, 1943 in Joplin, son of the late Robert Compton and Dorothy Evelyn Ingram Compton. He graduated from Joplin High School in 1961, and also got specialized training associated with sheet metal and welding. He worked with Eagle Picher for many years, where he was very proud to have worked on projects associated with the Apollo Space Programs, and then also worked for the City of Webb City in the Street Department before retiring.

Over the years Gary always enjoyed cars, and loved to drag race even as a youngster. He had several cars throughout his life, was a member of Corvette Clubs, and loved to attend car shows. His goal was to break the 10.9 second quarter mile. He was very good at pitching horse shoes, and won several "competitions" whether it be for work outings, with friends, etc. He also was a big fan of Elvis Presley, NASCAR, and watching sports of all kinds. His family remembers his love of taking care of his yard, and being outdoors. Gary enjoyed many things, and strived to be the best at everything he attempted, and loved his family with that same passion.

Survivors include his children; Mindy LeAnn Compton and Andy Collins of Oronogo, Missouri, Sharra Jannell Compton and Konrad Fehrenback of Webb City, Garri Kristi Compton of Oronogo, Jaymee Lynn Martin and husband William of Asbury, Missouri, and Kimberlee Renee Morris and husband Richard of Webb City; he married Earline Hays on November 29, 1963 in Joplin, she survives; a brother, Frank Compton of Monett, Missouri; 10 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and then at his home following the formal visitation.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Four States care of Parker Mortuary.
