Thomas W. “Bill” Lyscio, age 79, of Joplin, passed away on Thursday, October 20th 2022 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.
Bill was born on July 1st, 1943 in Joplin to the late Adolph “Bud” and Mary (Mallory) Lyscio.
He was a lifelong resident of Joplin. Growing up, he was in different activities such as band, tap dancing, baton twirling club, Boy Scouts and the JROTC. He graduated from Joplin High School with the class of 1961. During his high school years, he was a member of the Civil Air Patrol.
After graduation, he attended Joplin Junior College and went to IBM school. He worked as a book keeper with accounting responsibilities for the Cusack Company and Westervelt & Carson company from 1962 to 1972. In 1972, he started working at Hobbs Typewriter. Later, he became the owner and operator of Hobbs Typewriter and Time System Plus.
He specialized in typewriter and time clock sales and repairs. He kept up with the technology by attending many classes in this field. He also started selling electric typewriters, word processors, printers, scanners, fax machines and eventually the modern computers. He was a member of the National Office Machine Dealers Association.
Bill had many interests, skills and talents that he pursued over the years. He was a devoted community member. He became a member of the Duenweg Volunteer Fire Department in 1974 and remained active until the early 2000’s. He was a first responder and later achieved his Emergency Medical Technician License. He attended numerous classes to advance his skills for the fire department. He was a member of the Jasper County Emergency 911 Board. He also volunteered his time with Joplin Police Department as a Sentinel. Bill served on the Duquesne Village Board of Directors as well.
In 1974, Bill’s daughters became active in the Joplin Little League Fastpitch Softball Association. He was involved in the league by serving as a coach, team sponsor with his business, and then an umpire. He served as a Director on the Joplin Little League Softball Board. He was also one of the members instrumental in the building of the Blinzler Softball Field Complex. He was very dedicated to his responsibilities during these years.
Bill had attended different churches over the years but was a current member of the Central City Christian Church. He was an active servant for the churches. He served as an Upward Basketball coach and Cub Scout leader. He volunteered at God’s Resort and Watered Gardens ministries in various roles. While at Harmony Heights Baptist church, he was active in the preparation and serving of a free breakfast to the high school students.
At College Heights Christian church, he was active in a car care service for the community. He helped with car repairs and service. He also helped with the preparation and serving of breakfast to the volunteers and the customers in need. He served 2 mission trips to Brazil and 2 in Mexico. He enjoyed volunteering and serving those in need with great satisfaction.
Bill was a devoted father and enjoyed spending time with his family. He enjoyed numerous camping, fishing, swimming and boating, trips, along with family dinners and cookouts. He went on many trips and adventures over the years.
Bill is survived by his daughters, Kay Gilbert and her fiancée, Curtis Walker, of Webb City; Cheryl Garrison and her husband, Allen, of Carthage; Sarah Sheller and her husband, Rob, of Joplin; son, Anthony Taylor, of Jasper, Missouri; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Christine Gwaltney, of Joplin, his significant other for over 20 years, also survives. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his only sister, Sue Hubbs of Wichita, Ks.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Wednesday, October 26th, 2022 beginning at 12:00 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin. Immediately following with a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. Memorial contributions may be made to Watered Gardens or be entrusted to the mortuary.
