With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Carly Ann (Twarog) Carnes on October 6, 2023. Born in Girard, KS, Carly was a beacon of strength, intelligence, and compassion throughout her life, touching the lives of many with her unwavering spirit and dedication to helping others.
Carly's early life was rooted in Girard, where she attended Haderlein Elementary, Girard Middle School, and Girard High School, graduating in 2010. A natural leader and athlete, she was a force on the volleyball and basketball courts, earning numerous accolades and leading her teams to state appearances. Her leadership extended beyond sports, serving as Student Body President and being crowned Homecoming Queen in her senior year.
Carly continued her educational journey at Pittsburg State University (PSU), earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2014. Her passion for understanding the human body and helping others led her to the University of Kansas Medical Center (KU Med), where she earned her Doctorate of Medicine in 2018. Carly specialized in mental health disorders and completed her Psychiatry residency at KU in June 2022. She further specialized and completed her Addiction Psychiatry fellowship at KU in June 2023. She was American Board Certified in Psychiatry and served as an Addiction Psychiatrist at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Carly was not only a dedicated professional but also a devoted athlete and community member. A member of The Runner’s Edge “the Niners”, she was an accomplished runner, earning awards in numerous events, including the Steelhead 70.3 Half Ironman, Houston Marathon, and Alaskan Half Marathon. Her love for physical and mental wellness was also evident in her participation in meditation, yoga and pilates.
On June 4, 2022, Carly was united in marriage with Skylar Keith Carnes. Together they built a life filled with love, understanding, and shared passions. They enjoyed time together at the lake with their family and outdoor adventures with their dogs Lilly and Bear.
Carly is survived by her loving husband, Skylar Carnes of Olathe, Kansas and her dog, Bear; parents, David and Mary Twarog of Farlington, Kansas; and sister, Meryl (Twarog) Perez, brother-in-law, Anthony Perez, and cherished niece and nephew, Anthony Dylan Perez and Margaret Carly Perez, of Sacramento, California.
A memorial fund, the Carly Carnes – A Different Type of Marathon Foundation, has been established to support cancer patients, education, and health & wellness. Contributions may be sent to the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas at P.O. Box 1448, Pittsburg, KS 66762, or left at the wake or funeral service with a note of intent. A wake will be held on October 13th from 6-8pm at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard, KS. The funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, October 14th at 1pm at St. Michael’s Church in Girard, KS.
Friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Friday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard.
