(From Craig Hurtt Funeral Home)Funeral services for Rachel Louise Witty of Webb City and formerly of Seymour were held Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, at the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home of Seymour. Burial followed in the Seymour Masonic Cemetery, under the direction of the funeral home.
Mrs. Witty, 81, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, in her home.
She was born on Jan. 15, 1942, in Seymour to Wilbur and Sallie Mable Helms Harris.
She grew up in the Seymour area and attended grade school in Burnett School, a one-room schoolhouse in rural Seymour.
She attended high school and was a 1959 graduate of Seymour High School.
After graduation, she moved to Springfield and worked at a garment factory as a very accomplished seamstress.
She decided to become a homemaker for the next 18 years.
After her daughter was grown, she worked in food preparation at McDonald’s.
She then worked as cook for both the Joplin School District and at the St. John’s Hospital cafeteria in Joplin.
She also worked as a home-health aide for a short time before she retired.
She loved working in her flower gardens and doing many types of crafts, including ceramics and painting. Some of her other hobbies included cooking and thrift-store shopping.
She was a member of the First General Baptist Church.
She was also a proud member of the Red Hat Club.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her two brothers,
Jack and Jimmy Harris; and one sister, May Jo Taylor.
Survivors include her daughter, Eugenia Billings and husband Malcolm; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and her brother-in-law, Bill Taylor.
