David Johnston

David T. Johnston, age 69 of Joplin, passed away 9:06 a.m. Sunday, March 6, 2016 at his residence after an illness.

David was born July 29, 1946 in Mt. Vernon, New York to the late Charles Johnston, Sr. and May Irene Roscher Johnston.

David worked as a clinical social worker and therapist for Heartland Hospital as well as Turn Around Ranch. He was a devoted foster parent that had a passion for helping children. It was his life. He enjoyed cooking, playing chess, gardening and was active in the social movement of Democracy. David was a member of the Baha'i community. He and his wife enjoyed dancing.

David was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, having served in both the Philippines and in Germany.

He married his high school sweetheart, Gerrie-Ellen Maloney in 1973 in New York. She survives at the home.

Additional survivors include his children, Daniel Johnston, Gillian Tyrer and her husband, Al, Jackson Johnston, Melissa Johnston, Kristal Johnston, Anthony Johnston, Jennifer Peak-Johnston; one brother, Charles Johnston, Jr.; sister-in-law, Patsy Wilson; grandchildren, Patrick William Johnson, Maddison Anderson, Glen Anderson, Nellie Pearl Tyrer; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services are planned for Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Unity Church, Joplin. The family will receive friends following the services at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
