Sammie Lou Chase Roark returned to her Father in Heaven and her loving family on March 4, 2016. She was born in Miami, OK, January 22, 1924, the only child of Hazel and Bill Chase. She spent her young years growing up in McDonald County where her parents had a scout/dance camp called Camp Tilden on the banks of Big Sugar Creek. Sammie spent many happy summers roaming the hills and river at Cyclone.
She began taking dance in Joplin at age 6 and began teaching at age 12. At age 19 Sammie married her childhood sweetheart, John Barnes, who lost his life in WWII. Following the war she married her best friend's brother, Donald Roark. Their life together took them to a number of different midwest locations before they finally settled in Joplin where Sammie taught dancing. Following Donald’s passing she retired to Cyclone and re-opened Camp Tilden. There she enjoyed the friendship of many families who came to enjoy the beauties of Big Sugar Creek.
She is survived by her 4 daughters, Nancy Hammond of Wellsville, UT, Martha Edgren of Danville, CA, Betsy Wilson of Owensboro, KY and Margaret Holmes of Fremont, CA. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandaughter and one great grandaughter. Her mother Hazel used to look at the large family and say “all this from one little girl!”
To every thing there is a season… a time to be born, and a time to die;… A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance… Ecclesiastes 3:1-4
