Donald Lee 'Don' Cox, age 81, Joplin, retired battalion chief for the City of Pittsburg Fire Department, passed away at 1:57 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at his home after a sudden illness.
Don was born August 14, 1934 in Prairie Grove, Arkansas to the late Robert Lee Cox and Opal Marie Pense Cox. He had lived in the Pittsburg and Joplin areas most of his life.
He attended Eugene Field, Roosevelt Junior High and Pittsburg High School, where he was an All-State football player on the undefeated 1951 Dragon team. Don was a veteran of the United States Army and a faithful member of Forest Park Baptist Church and Gayle Ludwig's Sunday school class. His hobbies included table tennis, golfing, tennis, racquet ball, bowling and working in his yard.
He married Deloris Wanda Albin on June 6, 1954 in Pittsburg, Kansas. She preceded him in death on February 4, 2010.
In addition to his wife and parents, Don was preceded in death by a son, Jerry and wife, Dee.
Survivors include a son, Rodney Cox and his wife, Debbie, Brenham, Texas; three grandchildren, Lauren Montgomery and her husband, Matt, Kyle Cox, Tyler Cox and his wife, Kelsey; two great grandchildren, Logan and Lexi Montgomery; one brother, Samuel Cox and wife, Barbara, State of Hawaii; and a sister, Betty Manuel and husband, Leo, San Diego, California.
Services are planned for Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Forest Park Baptist Church Chapel. Dr. John Swadley will officiate. Entombment will follow in Highland Park Cemetery, Pittsburg, Kansas. Members of the Pittsburg Fire Department will serve as honor guard. The family will receive friends Monday from 5-7:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.
