Opal Irene Cooper, age 99, Carthage, Missouri, passed away Thursday morning,March 3, 2016, at St. Luke's Nursing Center in Carthage.
Opal Irene Pendleton was born September 28, 1916, in Aurora, Missouri to the late Carr M. Pendleton and Leona (Stogsdill) Pendleton. As a child she lived in Kendricktown, Missouri. She attended school in Kendricktown and later attended Hawthorne School in Carthage.
Opal married Loyd Tutt Cooper on July 15, 1933, in Carthage, and he preceded her in death on January 24, 1975. Opal was a homemaker and a wonderful cook who enjoyed baking and also making
candy for her family and friends. She was devoted to her family and was a wonderful Christian example. She leaves a legacy of many children and grandchildren who love the Lord. Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the hearts of many, and she was always
supportive and encouraging, wise and kind. Opal was a charter member of the Grand Avenue Church of God in Carthage. The church was very important to her and she served many years there as a Sunday School teacher and Children's Church leader. She was also a member of the Women of the Church of God group and was the Church Historian. Opal and Tutt purchased lake property on Grand Lake in 1941 and spent many happy hours there fishing and with family. She was also a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and never missed a game. She will be missed by all who love her.
Survivors include two sons, Larry D. Cooper (Marcia), Carthage, Missouri, and Dennis G. Cooper (Jane), Miller, Missouri, and one daughter, Marcia Lynne Raines (Stephen), Conroe, Texas. She is also survived by two sisters, Ina Chambell, Carthage, and Virginia Pendleton, Chicago, Illinois; six
grandchildren: Michael Cooper (Peggy), Springfield, Missouri, Michele Furry (David), Monett, Missouri, Melinda Teter (Mark), Ringgold, Georgia, Wesley Cooper (Amy), Miller, Missouri, Carrie Hunt (David), Miller, Missouri, Hollie Farran (Chris), Carthage, Missouri; 19 great-grandchildren,17
great-great grandchildren; and her friend and loving caregiver Patty Baker of Carthage, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers: Murrel Pendleton, Hollis Pendleton, and Mitt Pendleton, and four sisters: Florence Fansler, Lucille Wright, Doris Woodward, and Nova Hooper.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 7, 2016, from 9:00-10:00 a.m. in the Knell Mortuary Chapel, Carthage, with a funeral service following the visitation at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Tim Woodward and Pastor Sam Simmons will officiate. Interment will follow at Park Cemetery in Carthage. Memorial gifts are suggested to Grand Avenue Church of God, c/o Knell Mortuary, 308 W. Chestnut, Carthage, MO 64836.
