Patricia Wise Austin, 91, of Joplin, died Thursday, March 3, at the family home. She was born January 29, 1925, in Joplin, Mo to J. Connor and Florence Burress Wise. After graduating from Joplin High School in 1943, she worked during the war years then attended the University of Missouri – Columbia.
On October 2, 1948, she married James David Austin. They had a happy and loving partnership for 60 years. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2009. Also surviving are three children and their spouses: Linda and George Austin-Martin, David and Glenda Austin, and John and Sally Austin; seven grandchildren, Spencer and Connor Austin-Martin, Scott Austin and Susan Austin Perry (Rob), Brian Austin (Courtney), Sarah Rainey (Scott) and Alex Austin; great grandchildren, Isaac Harper, Eden Perry, Levi Perry, Emma Austin, Annabel Austin, Luke Austin, Carson Rainey, and Knox Rainey. She was also preceded in death by her parents and sister, Charlotte Goodman.
In 1969, she joined her husband in the real estate business then known as The Austin Agency. She had a fulfilling real estate career until her retirement in the mid-eighties. Working with her husband, Jim and Richard Duke, The Austin Agency developed the Roanoke Terrace Addition first conceived and planned by her father, J. Connor Wise. Through her business and friendships, she introduced many to the rich history and culture of Joplin.
She was a member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Twin Hills Country Club, Ridpath and Pi Beta Phi sorority at the University of Missouri. She happily gave her time to the St. Philip’s Episcopal Church Alter Guild, prayer chain and Crosslines Ministries.
A memorial service will be celebrated at 1:00, Monday, March 7, at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Father Frank Sierra will officiate. The family will receive friends after the service. Memorial contributions may be made to The Joplin Family Y, St. Philip’s Episcopal Church or Crosslines Ministries.
