Ruth Elizabeth Ruhl, age 93, of Joplin, passed away at 8:10 p.m. Thursday, March 17, 2016 at her home after an illness.
Ruth was born on December 23, 1922 in El Dorado, Kansas, the daughter of J.E. and Ann (Woodward) Barnhill. She had been a Joplin resident since 1962.
She grew up in Wichita and was an art major at both Wichita State University and Kansas University. During World War II, Ruth was employed at Beech Aircraft. She retired from J.C. Penney in 1987.
She married Jack Ruhl on October 14, 1945 at the First Baptist Church in Wichita. He preceded her in death on July 29, 2009.
Ruth was active at the First Baptist Church in Joplin, where she taught Sunday School and was also chairman of the Social Committee. She was also a faithful member of Fellowship Baptist Church, Joplin.
Ruth is survived by three children, Julie Jones, Chris Ruhl and Jeff Ruhl, all of Joplin; four grandchildren, Christy Reaves, Wichita, Elizabeth Raulston, Neosho, Emily Ruhl, Granby, Andy Ruhl, Webb City; and eight great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Montgomery and by a son, Robert (Bob) Ruhl, who was killed in Vietnam.
Services are planned for Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Rex Wakefield will officiate. Interment will follow in Osborne Memorial Cemetery
The family would like to thank Avalon Hospice for the care and support they showed to Ruth in their time with her.
