Vernie Cook

(From Clark Funeral Home)

Vernie Sam Cook went to be with Jesus on October 10, 2022, after reaching the age of 80 years old. After months of failing health, he died peacefully in his home in Neosho, Missouri, with his beloved wife Mildred, daughter Rosetta and her husband Darren, by his side.

Vernie was born on December 20, 1941, in Stella, Missouri, to Roy and Ada Cook. As a boy, he grew up on the Cook Dairy Farm with his four siblings.

In 1961 he met the love of his life, Mildred Hall. They married a year later and were an inseparable pair for 60 years; to that union, they raised two children.

Vernie was active in Splitlog Baptist Church. He was proud to serve as a deacon for many years.

While in Stella, Vernie worked many jobs, primarily as a mechanic at Jeffers Ford Motors and at the Neosho Bus Barn, which he retired from after 35 years.

Vernie loved to be with family and was always up for a fishing trip to Roaring River or a reunion with family and friends.

He was a good father who always cared for his children and did his best to teach and guide them toward The Lord. He was a loving grandfather to Morgan Renner and Blake Peoples and “Poppy” to Jack, Jett, and Hadlee Renner.

Vernie was a strong, proud, and God-fearing man. He is loved and will be missed by many.

He is preceded in death by his son Vernon Cook, parents Roy and Ada Cook, and siblings Oren Cook, Ernest Cook, Doris Foster, and Mary Oaks.

Vernie is survived by his loving wife, Mildred Cook, daughter Rosetta (Darren) Peoples; grandchildren Morgan (Trae) Renner and Blake (Kalli) Peoples; and great-grandchildren Hadlee, Jack, and Jett Renner.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at the Splitlog Baptist Church in Goodman, Missouri, with Chad Pendergraft and Shann Cobb officiating. Burial will follow at the Owsley Union Cemetery in Stella, Missouri. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at the Clark Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Neosho, Missouri.

In memory of Vernie, memorial contributions may be made to the Splitlog Baptist Church, PO Box 66, Neosho, MO 64850.
