Gene Hays

(From Parker Mortuary)

William Eugene 'Gene' Hays, age 90, Joplin, passed away at home on the evening of Tuesday, February 18, 2020, following several months of declining health.

He was born March 16, 1929 in Joplin to the late Frank and Leona (Hammer) Hays. Gene was a descendant of the Marcum family, who arrived in the southwest Missouri area shortly after the Civil War.

Gene's schooling all took place in Joplin. His musical ability was evident when he sang in the Apollo Club, a high school men's choir. Later, at what is now Missouri Southern State University, he also sang in the choir.

As a young man, Gene worked at his dad's general store at 12th and Main, in front of what is now the Joplin Flea Market. In addition to food and staples, the store was known for selling Christmas Trees.

Gene proudly served in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and was medically discharged because of a knee injury.

One of his first jobs was at Newman's Department Store in downtown Joplin. He was known for the beautiful window displays he created there.

After graduating from Joplin Junior College (now Missouri Southern State University) in 1949, Gene enrolled in beauty school and became well known in Joplin as a skilled hairdresser. He worked for several beauty salons, including Estelle's at 7th and Range Line and Ravel's at 15th and Virginia. His skill did not stop there. He was also well respected for his talents at floral designing and over the years excelled at creating beautiful arrangements for many community events.

Gene was also well known for his longtime involvement in Joplin Little Theater, where he appeared in numerous productions showcasing his singing abilities. He also designed floral displays for JLT events.

For many years, Gene served on the board of directors of the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition, a high-caliber competition attracting participants from around the world. He was an integral part of the event's planning committee and again created stunning floral arrangements to highlight the competition's various events.

Cooking was one of Gene's many talents, too. He enjoyed preparing Sunday dinners for friends, and to receive one of his specially made birthday cakes was always a treat.

Gene had a kind heart for animals and he loved his cats.

He traveled extensively, often with his cousin, Jere Marcum and good friend, Bob Corley. Countries visited included Italy, Malta, England, France, Germany, Spain and China.

Gene was a true gentleman and dear friend to many and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents; older brother, Frankie Hays, Jr., Joplin; and sister, Marilyn Hays, Joplin.

Survivors include cousins, Jere Marcum, Joplin, Richard Hays, South Carolina; and close friend, Robert Whitehead, Carthage.

No formal services are planned, as per Gene's wishes. However, a visitation will be held Wednesday, February 26, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, 6th and Byers. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice, or to the Joplin Human Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
