Valerie Ellen Ruger, age 59 of Galena, passed away at 5:55 AM on Sunday, February 9, 2020 at National Healthcare in Joplin, MO.
Valerie was born in Joplin, MO on February 20, 1960 to the union of Richard Ruger and Betty Jean (Wenzel) Ruger. She attended Columbus High School with the Class of 1978, and later went on to college to receive a certificate in photography. She spent most of her adult life as a CNA, working at Galena Nursing Center and several other healthcare facilities in the area. She enjoyed fishing, reading, spending time with the grandkids, and socializing in the company of others.
She was united in marriage with Gary Smith in 1985. They divorced in 1993.
She is survived by three daughters, Brittany Smith of Baxter Springs, Andrea Smith of Gravitte, AR, and Amy Ruger of Joplin, MO; two step children, Gary Smith, Jr., and Jessica Griffin both of Baxter Springs; and nine grandchildren, Rowan, Dillon, Wyatt, Amelia, Cade, Kennedi, Lucas, Tayva, and Avery. She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Betty Jean; and three brothers, Stephen Davis, Michael Dameron, and David Dameron.
Ms. Ruger has been entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena for cremation. The family will host a celebration of life at a later date.
