John R. Giles, 94, passed away February 16, 2020.
John was born February 14, 1926 to Paul and Minnie Giles in Racine, Missouri. He was the last survivor of nine siblings.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of 67 years; four children, Patty (Jerry) Pyle, Michael Giles, Marilyn (Jim) Anderson and Steve (Liliya) Giles; two grandchildren, Bryan Pyle and John Anderson; and two great-grandsons, Luke and Logan Pyle.
John was a WWII veteran, having served in Japan and the Battle of Luzon. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal.
After the war, he graduated as a mechanical engineer from Finley Engineering College in Kansas City. He worked in Kansas City and Houston before returning to Joplin. John was employed as a mechanical engineer for Allgier Martin until retirement.
John started his second career after retirement, Joplin Striping Service. He built his own striping machine and painted restaurants, hospitals, underground, airports and even a football field.
John never met a stranger. He was very likable and will be missed by his family and all who knew him.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 20, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial with full military honors will follow at Osborne Cemetery. Visitation will be held at 9:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Joplin Area Catholic Schools.
