Charlyn E. Colaw, 99, Carthage, MO, went home to be with her Lord June 27, 2016.
Charlyn was born January 18, 1917, in rural Carthage, the daughter of Frank L. Kyle and Iva Fadler Kyle. In 1933, at age 16, she was graduated from Carthage High School and later was a graduate of Draughon Business College.
She married A. Purdy Colaw March 24, 1940, in Joplin. Except for the war years, she was a lifelong Carthage resident. She was a much beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt. She was an accomplished homemaker, known for her cooking, sewing and quilting skills. After her daughters were raised, she worked at Revival Fires Ministry in Joplin and then served as assistant city clerk in the administration of Carthage Mayor John Sheldon. Later, she was secretary of Fairview Christian Church, of which she and her husband were charter members. She served many years at the church as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. Her family valued her loving and nurturing nature, her Christian faith, her wisdom and the twinkle in her eye.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, her sister Feryne Rinehart, her brother Kenneth Kyle, and her brother and sister-in law Kendall and Billie Colaw.
Survivors include two daughters Karen Herzog and husband Don, Carthage, and Barbara Tucker and husband Tom, Tahlequah, Oklahoma; three grandchildren Janet Tucker Kellogg (Josh) of Windsor, Colorado, Daniel Tucker (Sarah) of Hudson Oaks, Texas, and Christopher Herzog (Sarah) of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; seven great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and her faithful caregiver Maria (Yolie) Cross.
Visitation will be held 6:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, July 1, 2016 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. A private inurnment will be held at Fasken Cemetery, Carthage, at a later date. Memorial gifts are suggested to Fairview Christian Church or to Hospice Compassus in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W. Chestnut, Carthage, MO 64836.
