Wayne Leon Furnas of Rural Miami, OK, passed away Monday, June 13, 2016 at Chetopa Manor in Chetopa, KS. He was 84.
Wayne was born January 23, 1932 in Melrose, KS to Ernest and Katie (Crome) Furnas. He was a lifetime Miami and Commerce area resident. He graduated from Commerce High School in 1952 and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Wayne worked for B.F. Goodrich in Miami for 32 years. He also was a farmer and rancher. He loved Horse Pulling and children. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church west of Commerce.
Wayne married Mary Caroline Furnas on April 7, 1952. She preceded him in death on February 18, 2014. He was also preceded by his son Doug Furnas in 2012, his parents, 2 brothers, Raymond Furnas and Clifford Furnas and 1 sister, Irene Moore.
Survivors include his son Mike Furnas of Miami, OK, 3 daughters, LaWayne Clapp and husband Jim of Miami, OK, Pam Gray and husband Doug of Miami, OK and Terri VanWey and husband Steve of Carthage, MO, 2 brothers, Pete Furnas of Chetopa, KS and James Furnas of Stockton, CA, 3 sisters,, Violet Bates of Chetopa, KS, Deloris Wiens of Oswego, KS and Ouida Polson of Keller, TX, 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Celebration of Life services will be Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at Paul Thomas Funeral Home Chapel in Commerce, OK with Rev. David McCord officiating. The family will receive friends following the services. Memorials are suggested to the Doug Furnas Scholarship Fund in care of Commerce High School.
