Sam Miller

Samuel L. Miller, age 84, Jasper, MO, passed away at 9:45 p.m. June 20, 2016 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Missouri. 

Sam was born March 24, 1932 in Jasper County, Missouri to Samuel J. and Lorraine (York) Miller. He graduated from Jasper High School in 1950 and was named Star Farmer and later was awarded the American Farmer degree. He attended the University of Missouri and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Sigma Fraternity. He graduated in 1956 with a B. S. Degree in Agriculture Economics. He served as a field representative for Borden's, Pet Milk, and W. R. Grace Company. He started farming with his father in 1973. Sam was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Jasper Masonic Lodge #398, the Carthage Shrine Burn Crew, and Abou Ben Adhem in Springfield, and he was a member of the Jasper United Methodist Church. 

On December 25, 1954 he married Sherrill Weatherly. She survives. Sam is also survived by four daughters; Kristi (Bernie) Busken, Gilbert, AZ, Shelley (Mark) Stone, Maryland Heights, MO, Molly (Tim Reynolds) Miller, Dodge City, KS, and Courtney Miller, Lake Mary, FL He was “Bacca” to five grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. For many years Sam was the sports writer for the Jasper County News and covered all the football games, always listing every player’s name in his weekly story. Sam had a host of friends and never met a stranger. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed playing bridge with the Monday afternoon bridge group. 

The family will receive friends at Weng Funeral Chapel in Jasper, MO from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2016. A Memorial Service will be held at the Jasper United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2016. The body has been cremated and a private inurnment will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorial gifts to the Jasper United Methodist Church or Paradise Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Weng Funeral Chapel.
