Gwain D “Monk” January, age 58, passed away at 6:54 pm, Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, MO following an illness.

Monk was born July 16, 1957 in Parsons, Kansas. His parents were James Richard and Donna (Fugate) January II. He had lived n Columbus for the past 16 years, moving from Pittsburg, KS.
He had served in the US Army Reserve. He worked as a resource coordinator for Skill’s in Parsons, KS for 19 years. He was a family man, and was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan. He enjoyed decorating for Halloween and digging for diamonds in Arkansas.

He is survived by his wife, Karen (Conner) January; 3 sons, James January (Ashley), Columbus, KS, Richard “Rick” January, Columbus, and Derrick (Trisha) January, Joplin, MO; 6 grandchildren, Olivia January, Conner January, Owen January, NovaLee January, Jaden January and Arkham January; 2 brothers, Richard January, Arma, KS and Gerald January, Smithville, MO; and 2 sisters, Kitten Wilson, Arma, KS and Carolyn Schroeder, Arma, KS.

He has been entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home for cremation. Memorial services will be held by the family at 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 16, 2016, at Forrest Park in Parsons, KS.
