Garnett Thomas, age 92, Joplin, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2016 in Joplin. She was one of many "Rosie the Riveters", and has embarked on a new adventure, but didn't have time to say goodbye.
Garnett was born February 13, 1924 in Joplin, daughter of the late Edmond "Newt" and Gertrude Minser Layne. She grew up in the Spurgeon area, and graduated from Neosho High School. She has lived in the Joplin area most of her life.
She will be deeply miss by her family and friends. She was an avid animal lover. She was known as grandma to most of her family and friends, and she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs. She was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church where she volunteered much time, and she also volunteered with St. Peter and St. Mary's Catholic Schools.
In addition to her parents, Garnett was preceded in death by brothers, John, Joe, Andy and Jack Layne; sisters, Flossie Layne and Ethel Kasper; and her husband, Robert "Bob" Thomas.
Survivors include her son, Blake Thomas and wife Sherolyn of Kansas City, Missouri; daughter, Willa Humphrey (Jaques)and husband Stephen of Joplin; sister, Margaret Wilkinson of Webb City; three grandchildren, Scott Humphrey, Brett Humphrey, and Kecia Humphrey of Joplin; two great-grandchildren, Crystal Dedmon and husband Randy of Racine, Missouri, Janel Humphrey of Anderson, Missouri; two great-great-grandchildren, Elly Dedmon, Wyatt Dedmon.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church with Father J. Friedel officiating. Interment will follow a luncheon at the church in Osborne Memorial Cemetery with family serving as pallbearers.
Parish Prayers will be said by Father J. Friedel beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Monday followed by a visitation at Parker Mortuary Chapel.
