Marie Bennett

Marie T. Bennett, age 87 of Joplin, Mo passed away Friday June 3, 2016 at her home. She was born on October 13, 1928 in Quapaw, Ok the daughter of Lester and Verna “Flow” Abernathy. She married Paul R. Bennett on April, 26 1955 in Redings Mills, Mo he preceded her in death on July 24, 2007. Marie was a 1948 graduate of Picher High School Picher, Ok, she then earned her Nursing Certificate from St. John's Hospital Joplin, Mo in 1951. She worked as a Registered Nurse for St. John's Hospital, a surgery nurse for Dr. Sidney Scorse, Freeman Hospital, Joplin Health Department, Joplin Public Schools, Jasper County Health Department and also a Volunteer for Joplin City Clinic for several years. She was a member of the 26th and Connecticut Church of Christ in Joplin and the Missouri Nursing Association. She was an avid quilter giving away most of the quilts she made away and enjoyed organizing family reunions. 

Marie was also preceded in death by her parents and four brothers: Lester, Gene, Jim and Bob Abernathy. She is survived by a son Greg Bennet of Joplin, Mo, a brother Jack Abernathy of Miami, Ok, two sisters Joyce Finter of Tulsa, Ok and Dorothy Wieland of Collinsville, IL, a granddaughter Laura Kennard and a great granddaughter Ashlynn Kennard. 

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 am Wednesday June 8, 2016 at the Swares Prairie Baptist Cemetery Seneca, Mo. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Wednesday at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory. The family suggests contributions to the Marie Bennett Memorial Fund in care of the Mortuary.
