Joseph Arthur “Joe” Luce, of Mt. Vernon, MO, formerly of Jerico Springs, MO, departed this life on Saturday, January 16, 2016, in the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, MO at the age of 88 years.
He was born on September 20, 1927 in Atlanta, KS to Edward and Mildred (Thornton) Luce. Joe served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. While serving on board the USS Sea Robin SS407 on the first day of June in the year 1947, he was part of the first voyage to round Cape Horn by submarine.
Joe was united in marriage to Betty Redington on December 19, 1953 in Mulvane, KS. Preceding him in death were his parents, Edward and Mildred Luce; his wife, Betty Luce; two brothers; and one sister. Survivors include one son, Roger Luce of Jerico Springs, MO; three daughters, Jolene Daniel and husband Randy of South Greenfield, MO, Dixie Goodman and husband Mark of Carthage, MO, and Bonnie Kissel of Carthage, MO; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Gastel, Christopher Gastel, Amy Dalene Mitchell and husband Don Allen, Brian Lowry and wife Krista, Maegan Linden and husband Alan, Austin Goodman and wife Erin, and Mallory Checkett and husband Brendan; and six great-grandchildren, Darren Mitchell, Alli Mitchell, Brody Mitchell, Hawk Linden, Hayden Lowry, and Reese Lowry.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, in Maple Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the funeral chapel.
