Vernon Leonard Thies, age 87, Joplin, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Joplin Gardens following an illness.
Vernon was born March 4, 1928 in Itasca, Illinois to the late August Thies and Anna Mueller Thies and had lived in the Joplin area the past twenty years moving from Illinois.
He had worked in coal mining and farming. Vernon worked many years as a warehouseman at Elgin Paper Company, Elgin, Illinois, before he retired.
Vernon was a member of the Teamsters. He enjoyed nature, whether it was just being outdoors or tending to his garden. He attended music shows, traveled when he could and enjoyed making people laugh with his many stories. Vernon will be missed by all that knew him.
In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie and several siblings.
Surviving is a nephew, Tom Holmquist and his wife, Joyce, Webb City; a great nephew, Kurt Holmquist, a great niece, Kristin Holmquist; and longtime friend, Donette Reynolds.
Services are planned for Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Interment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the chapel. Pallbearers will be Kurt Holmquist, Tom Holmquist, Billy Haring, Don Reynolds, Jr., John Reynolds and Dwayne Hopkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Reynolds, Sr. and Larry Martin.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
