Bill Fields

William Joe “Bill” Fields, 90 of Pittsburg, Kansas left this world to join his loving wife of 60 years, Erma, who passed in March of 2020.

He was born November 13, 1930 in Pittsburg, Kansas to John Henry and Margaret Eva (Hay) Fields. Bill graduated from Pittsburg High School Class of 1949. He served in the United States Air Force from October 1949 to July 1953, he was trained to install radar towers and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He also played softball, baseball, and basketball for the United States Air Force traveling teams during his time in the service. 

After the service and jobs in Kansas City and California he settled his family in Pittsburg, Kansas and worked for Day & Zimmerman contractors at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant and finished his career of 22 years as a budget and estimating analyst. Proud member of the VFW and American Legion.








Bill’s life was filled with the love of a large family. He enjoyed St. Louis Cardinals baseball, managing many Pittsburg softball teams, playing on several teams including the Anonymous Dozen with many family members, coin collecting, playing cards, hunting, fishing, enjoying time at family picnics and running cattle in his retirement.

He leaves two sons, William Joel Fields & Kathy of Pittsburg, Kansas, Jon Michael Fields & Regina of Carthage, Missouri; Grandchildren Whitney Gould & Michael of Pratt, Kansas and Josh Proffitt & Tillie of Pittsburg, Kansas; Great Grandchildren: Brandon and Kaden, Gracynn and Charlotte. Two sisters: Joyce Mishmash of Pittsburg, Kansas and Trish Victor of Grand Lake, Oklahoma and five brothers: Fred Fields, Frontenac, Kansas, John Fields, Larry Fields, Terry Fields, and Mark Fields all of Pittsburg, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Erma Jo Ann “Riley” Fields, three sisters: Lavone Thompkins, June Dougherty, and Margaret Fossey, and four brothers: Bobby Lee Fields, Tim Fields, Wayne Fields, and Howard Fields.

A celebration of the lives of Bill and Erma will occur at a later date.
