(From Derfelt Funeral Home)Joseph (Jody) B Mallatt, age 49, of Galena, KS passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 9:13 am at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO from complications due to surgery with much family by his side.
Jody was born on March 30, 1971 in Joplin to Richard Mallatt Jr and Reva Kay Hopkins. He was a resident of this area for many years but had stops in many different locations due to his employment.
Jody lived in many places as he lived and worked in Riverton, Lawrence, Overland Park, Dallas, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Little Rock and Galena. He was a graduate of Riverton High School and Pittsburg State University where he majored in Finance and Accounting.

Career wise he wore many hats working for Anderson Consulting, Sprint Telecom, AllTel, Freelance Consulting and most recently, and currently, as a Telecommunications Consultant at CFI in Joplin. He also had membership in Galena Masonic Lodge #194, Order of the Eastern Star and past member of the Scottish Rite and Mirza Shrine in Pittsburg. Jody was an avid KU Jayhawks fan and celebrated the Final Four and his favorite trip, the 2008 Orange Bowl . He truly enjoyed watching the Jayhawks and Chiefs with his many friends.
He was an entertainer, friend to many, and always in the middle of the crowd. His other hobbies included music from Frank Sinatra to Rap, playing cards, and living the lake life. He had a huge and generous heart that was giving to so many that he came into contact with.
As news of his passing has been shared, the outpouring of love, comments and memories from the many seasons of his life by so many friends are noted. We have enjoyed them and thank all of you who have shared their interactions and the impact that he had on them. The sentiment that is most descriptive of his life is simply- If Jody loved you, he loved you with his whole heart. Jody was the life of the party and will leave behind numerous family and friends who will miss him dearly.
He is preceded in death by maternal grandfather and grandmother Bill and Maxine Poteet, fraternal grandfather Richard (Dobs) Mallatt Sr, step father Roy Hopkins, step sister Christi Shaw and his beloved and devoted dog Snickers.
Jody is survived by his father Richard Mallatt Jr and wife Connie (Riverton), mother Reva Kay Hopkins(Baxter Springs), Brother Will Mallatt and wife Alicia(Riverton), Life sister Tiffani Schremmer Meier and husband Martin(Lantana, TX), close cousin Peyton Westmoreland and husband John(Baxter Springs), dear dear friends Sandy and Chuck Eichhorn(Joplin, MO), step sister Teresa Mercer and husband David(Miami), step brother John Shaw and wife Josie(Webb City), step sister Belinda Jasmine and husband Jay(Oronogo) half sister Jessica Ashe, nieces and nephews John Mallatt and wife Leah with Shiloh and Emmy(Riverton), Dakotah Noble and husband Mike with August(Pittsburg), MacKenzie, Macey and Maddie Ashe (Baxter Springs) and Caleb and Kennedy Meier(Lantana, TX).
Jody’s wishes were to be cremated and immediate family and friends will have a small private gathering in order to celebrate his life.
In lieu of flowers, those wanting to show their love and kindness may make a donation to the Humane Society of their choice in the name of Jody and Snickers Mallatt or the charity of their choice in his name.
