(From Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home)Velma L. Nickel, 74, of Chetopa, passed away at 3:51 a.m., Monday, December 28, 2020, at Girard Medical Center in Girard.
Velma Louise Burrows was born on June 25, 1946, to Hollis Sylvester and Gertrude Blanche (Harrison) Burrows in Oswego, Kansas. She grew up and attended school in Oswego.
Most of Velma’s life was spent in the Bartlett and Oswego area. She sold Avon for over 25 years.
She was a member of Community Bible Church in Oswego. Her favorite activities included cooking, fishing and gardening.
On September 1, 1963, Velma and George “Earl” Nickel were united in marriage. He preceded her in death on June 16, 2016.
Survivors include:
One son – Darin Nickel of Wichita, Kansas
Four sisters – Jeanie Anderson of Pryor, Oklahoma
Iris Paullus of Holylake, Texas
Lucy Godfrey of Joplin, Missouri
Joy Delmont of Columbus, Kansas
She was preceded in death by her husband, George “Earl” Nickel; one son, Brian Nickel; her parents; six brothers and two sisters.
There will be a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 23, 2021, at the Community Bible Church in Chetopa. A committal service will follow at Lake Creek Cemetery in Bartlett, Kansas. Services are under the direction of the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa.
