(From Derfelt Funeral Home)Two decades after being left non-verbal by a stroke, Ramona “June” Charles found her voice on January 20, 2021. She left her chair behind to walk the streets of gold with many family, friends, and loved ones there to greet her.
Her family would like to express their gratitude to the nurses and staff at Galena Nursing Center and Westgate at Wildwood who cared for and loved June, creating a home for her when she could not be home.
June was born April 27, 1934 in Wyandotte, OK to the union of Walter Lee Baumann and Susie Sarah Baumann. Though she was older by a few minutes than her twin, Rayma “Jean”, she reveled in being the baby of the family. She was fortunate to have four older siblings to look out for her, but none cared for her better or more fiercely than her twin.

In 1947, the family moved to a farm in Lowell, KS where June would often sneak away to read when she was supposed to be doing farm chores. She graduated from Riverton High School in 1953 and worked as a secretary for Farm Credit for 15 years.
June loved her family more than anything. Though she never had children of her own, she loved being an aunt to her 10 nephews and 8 nieces with too many great and great-great nieces and nephews to count. She even recently became a great-great-great-aunt! She never missed an opportunity to ooh and ahh at a new niece or nephew and loved to snuggle them anytime she had a chance. She was an avid knitter and was famous in her family for her knitted house shoes that were often Christmas gifts.
June is survived by two sisters, Jean Morris, Baxter Springs, KS and Dora Mae Inman, Mesa, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Walter Lee Baumann and Wife Maxine of Galena, KS, Jack Baumann (Joann), Wichita, KS, and James Rex “Buck” Bauman (Patti), Carthage, MO, two brother-in-law, Edwin “Bill” Morris, Baxter Springs, KS, and Dan Inman, Mesa, AZ, and her special friend Hal Haggard of Grove, OK.
Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday January 27 at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs, KS. Family will receive visitors one hour before services. Pallbearers will be Richard Eckler, Billy Morris, Darryl Anderson, Mark Baumann and Jerry Baumann. Online condolences can be made at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.
