Velma Wood

(From Ozark Funeral Home)

Velma Faye Marion Wood, age 70, was born on July 20, 1953, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma to Ellis and Bonnie (Young) Sanders, peacefully passed away from cancer at her residence in Pineville, Missouri, on Monday morning, October 2, 2023.

A loving and selfless woman, Velma leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to her family and friends.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, three children, Douglas Marion, PFC Christopher Marion, and Preston Harmon, as well as her three brothers, William and Sam Sanders, and LeeDon Caviness. She is survived by her loving husband, Walter Wood, and a large, loving family including twelve children, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, three brothers, a sister, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and friends.

The matriarch of a large and loving family, Velma was a guiding force in the lives of her twelve children: Georgia Ritter (Bill) of Rogers, Arkansas, Heather Shahbazian (Hanby) of San Jose, California, Steven Hudson (Connie) of Gravette, Arkansas, Rick Harmon of Pineville, Missouri, Jason Wood (Lorianne) of the state of Oregon, April Streit of Blythe, California, Karl Wood of Jane, Missouri, Jason Harmon (Jennifer) of Rogers, Arkansas, Joni Montgomery (Darren Buntin) of Diamond, Missouri, Brandon Marion (LaQueena) of Anderson, Missouri, Kevin Marion (Venus) of Stella, Missouri, and Jessica Rosenbohm (Jaysen) of Anderson, Missouri.

Born in Tahlequah, Velma attended school in Westville, Oklahoma. She resided in Fayetteville and Ft. Smith, Arkansas before moving to Pineville, Missouri, in 1988. Velma was a woman of many talents, but she was best known as a loving homemaker, a title she wore with pride and a pinch of sass. Velma was the matriarch of a brood that rivaled the Brady Bunch. Her love for her family was evident in every aspect of her life, from her devotion to her children and grandchildren, to the joy she found in simple activities like sewing and cooking. She cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren, always ready with a warm hug, a comforting word, or a delicious home-cooked meal.

Velma was a pillar of strength for her family, always there to lend a helping hand, a listening ear, or a shoulder to lean on. She was known for her selflessness, always putting the needs of others before her own. Her home was always open to family, friends, and anyone in need of comfort or support. Her caring nature and generous spirit touched the lives of everyone she met, leaving a lasting impact that will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.

In addition to her husband and children, Velma is survived by her brothers, Wayne Sanders of Westville, Oklahoma, Tom Sanders of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Calvin Sanders of Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma; and her sister, Wanda McGaugh of Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma. Numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive her, each of them holding dear memories of Velma’s kindness, warmth, and unwavering love.
