(From Derfelt Funeral Home)James Daniel Brumback joined his daughter, Hope, and his parents in Heaven on Tuesday, December 29, 2020.
James, better known as Jim or Mr. Brumback by his multitude of family, friends, and former students, was born on April 3, 1950 in Columbus, Kansas to Manuel James and Eva (Patton) Brumback. Jim was the middle of three children. By his sisters’ account, he was the favorite and most spoiled. However, his older sister, Sandra Zane, and his younger sister, Kimberly Herman, loved him immensely just the same.
During Jim’s high school years, he would frequently be seen hanging out with his best friend Rick Massengale or in the principal's office. It was a pleasant surprise to Mr. Johnson that Jim became a teacher.
Jim’s parents owned nursing homes in Baxter Springs, which enabled his love of muscle cars. It seemed he had a new one every few months. Jim loved his cars, especially his GTO Judge, but there was nothing he loved more than Ranae. Jim and Ranae met in high school. They shared a work-study class together and both worked at his family’s nursing home.
Jim married the love of his life, Ranae Jones, in the summer of 1969 at an intimate wedding in Galena, Kansas. Shortly afterward he enlisted in the Army in support of the Vietnam War. During a training mission, Jim was seriously injured in a roll-over vehicle accident, which affected him the rest of his life. Their daughter Charity Laine, was born in March 1970, followed by Carmen Hope in November 1971, and Travis Todd in September 1974. Unfortunately, Carmen Hope passed shortly after birth. In 1995, their family was completed when Danielle Nicole joined the household. Jim loved the company of his family and could always be found in his garage or office blasting his favorite music or building some project for Ranae. He was never at a loss for words and was a master at telling stories or coming up with a good joke (oftentimes at Ranae’s expense).
In Jim’s life he held different job titles, but by far his favorite and most influential was as a teacher. Graduating in 1985 from Missouri Southern State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education in Industrial Arts, Jim started his teaching career in Rich Hill, Missouri. He retired years later in Galena, Kansas. He taught hundreds of students, many still kept in contact years later, always with a good story or memory. Jim was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veteran’s and a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Jim is survived by his wife Vickie Ranae Brumback; his three children: Charity Qualls and husband Ryan of Baxter Springs; Travis Brumback and wife Cindy of Baxter Springs; and Danielle Dunnic of Oronogo, MO. Jim, also, has ten grandchildren: Renae Malan, Ryan Bruning, Madison Qualls, Jax Brumback, Lauren Qualls, Sydney Brumback, Nathan Qualls, Kennedy Qualls, Landyn Davidson, and Avery Stuart, and eight great-grandchildren.
Jim was such an amazing man, our entertainment, our comedian, our favorite story teller. He was the man that loved us so hard, adored his beautiful wife and was a wonderful father and grandpa. No words can describe the amount of love we have for him or the ache in our hearts without him here. No amount of time together would have ever been enough.
Services will be held at The Ritz, 1145 Military Avenue, Baxter Springs, at 2 p.m., January 10th. Online condolences may be made at derfeltfuneralhome.com.
