Dawson Lee Mitts, age 77, Joplin, passed away on Friday, December 5, 2014 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Dawson was born January 22, 1937 in Turpin, Oklahoma, son of the late Eldon Lacy Mitts and Berta Mae Hightower Mitts. He attended high school in Golden City, Missouri, and after high school he joined the United States Navy, and served during the Korean Conflict.
He moved to California following his Military service, and attended Long Beach State University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He returned to Wichita, Kansas and opened Mitts Electric, which he owned and operated for 21 years. In 1996 he closed the business and moved to Joplin where he worked for Russell Belden Electric until 2009.
He had a passion for flying, and acquired his pilot's license, and flew while owning his business in Wichita. He also served as a Reserve Deputy with the Sedgwick County, Kansas Sherriff's Department. He was currently a member of Fellowship Baptist Church of Joplin.
Dawson is survived by his wife, Judy A. Mitts of Joplin; son, Robert Lee Mitts of Wichita; daughter, Susan Lee Mitts Fasciano also of Wichita; step-children, Jennifer Wiens and husband Galen of McPherson, Kansas; Tom Warren of Anchorage, Alaska, Tim Warren and wife Kitten of Wichita, Kansas; grandchildren, Nathan Parks, Gabriel Roach, Kayleb Roach, Taylor Roach, Lane Wiens, and Reed Wiens; great-grandchildren, Kayler and Ariella.
Graveside services will be Thursday, December 11, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge, Kansas with family serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Wednesday, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
