Steve J. Phelps, age 63 of Columbus, Ks, passed away at 12:42 p.m. on Monday, December 1, 2014 surrounded by his loving family.
Born May 17, 1951 in Phoenix, AZ, he was the son of the late Kawl and Virginia Fox Phelps. Raised in Phoenix, he graduated from high school there and moved to the Joplin-Neosho areas in 1969. He had lived in Columbus the past 17 years. Steve was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. He obtained his Bachelor Degree in Nursing from M.S.S.U. and retired as a Registered Nurse, having worked for Ozark Center and as Community Liaison for Dr. Kory.
In 2001, Steve gave his life to the Lord, Jesus Christ, and afterwards devoted his time to telling others the good news that Jesus Saves! He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Oronogo. Steve loved music, playing guitar, and singing.
Survivors include two daughters, Kristin Turner and husband Thomas of Carl Junction, MO, Jennifer Parker and husband Ray of Joplin; four grandchildren, Ashley Nelson, Jordan and Clay Parker and Caleb Turner; four great-grandchildren, Dalton, Jaxon, Parker and Jenna; his brother, Kerry K. Phelps of Meade, KS; his stepmother, Joan Phelps of Neosho; several nieces and nephews.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary. Memorial services will be held Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Oronogo with Rev. Darin Youngberg officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be in Steve’s memory to the church.
