George Flanigan

Judge George M. Flanigan, 89, Carthage, passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at St. Luke’s Nursing Center, Carthage.  George Matthew Flanigan was born December 10, 1925 in Carthage; the fourth son of the late John Hagar Flanigan and Gladys Callaway Flanigan.  He was born and raised in Carthage and was a graduate of Carthage High School, Class of 1942 and received his LLB bachelor of law degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1949. Judge Flanigan was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World War II and was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict. His military service included assignments aboard both the USS Pittsburgh and the USS Columbus.  In 1974, Judge Flanigan was appointed by the Governor of Missouri to the Court of Appeals, Southern District located in Springfield, MO.  He retired from the bench in 1996.  He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage.

He married Patricia Dooms on December 29, 1951 in Springfield, MO; she survives.  Additional survivors include three children; David Brennan Flanigan, wife, Betsy, Carthage, Elaine Flanigan Berry, husband, James, St. Louis, MO and Matthew C. Flanigan, wife, Tracy, Carthage; four grandchildren, Devin Callaway Flanigan, Kelly Ann Flanigan, James Brennan Flanigan and Anne Catherine Flanigan; one brother, Laurence Hamilton Flanigan, wife, Eleanor, Carthage.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 PM, Sunday, December 28, at Knell Mortuary, Carthage.  At the family’s request, please make your personal contacts at the visitation and not the family home. Funeral mass will be held at 1:30 PM, Monday, December 29 at Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage.  The Very Reverend Steve Wilson will officiate.  Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage.  In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial gifts be directed to the Carthage Police Department for the benefit of the annual Children’s Christmas Party in care of Knell Mortuary, Carthage, MO.  Online condolences may be expressed through www.knellmortury.com. -
