Bert Stone

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

Roberta Joyce (Stead) Stone, known fondly as “Bert” to her friends and family, passed away Monday, November 22. She was born to Fern and Vernon Stead on September 6, 1937 in Kewanee, IL. She attended Kewanee Boilers High School where she graduated with the class of 1955.

Bert married Donald R. Stone that same year and the city girl moved to the country. She milked cows, drove tractors, canned her plentiful garden harvest, and raised four children on the farm. She found a job in town as bookkeeper for Bradford Industries, where she worked until 1973.

Bert left the farm as an independent woman and left half her heart behind her. She loved to vacation in Wisconsin and Missouri, spending time fishing their many lakes, and eventually made Missouri her home. There she found better pay and many job opportunities. She employed her bookkeeping skills with the Red Cross, KDMO radio station, Carthage Cable Computers, Grand Lake Mental Health Management, and Willow Crest Hospital.

In 1988, Bert received the ovarian cancer diagnosis that would bring her bookkeeping career to an end. She spent the next year battling cancer and healing by the lake. She would can, bake Christmas cookies, and paint to build strength. It was during that time she met the love and companion of her life, Bill Lamb.

In 1992 Bert went to work for the craftsmen at Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO. She worked for fifteen different craftsmen doing their craft and entertaining the many visitors. She spent ten years at this post and loved every minute of it.
Bert loved her sister, Delores. They spent many hours of their retirement going for rides and making jellies, Bert’s beloved dog, Charlie, was always by her side.

Bert was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Terry D. Stone, and her life companion, Bill Lamb.

She is survived by her sister, Delores (Stead) Grimes, her children, Marilyn (Stone) Wilson and husband Tom, Rob Stone and wife Francie, and Beth (Stone) Skinner and husband Brent. Also, her grandchildren, Mary Wood and husband Rob, Mark Wilson, Adam Wilson and partner Linda Emmons, and Cameron Skinner, and her great-grandchildren, Nyia, Marcus, and Devon Stone, and Charlie Wilson.Read Less
