Billy Abbott

Mr. Billy Jerome Abbott, 80, of Joplin, Missouri, departed this life on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, Missouri.

Bill entered this life on March 4, 1941, in Hamburg, Iowa, son of the late Roy Leon and Helen Elizabeth (Cass) Abbott. He attended high school in Fairfax, Missouri, where he graduated in 1960. In December of 1960, Bill enlisted in the United States Army. After his honorable discharge in December of 1963, he returned home to Fairfax. 








On April 1, 1961, he was united in marriage to Sharon Norton and together they have shared the last sixty years. He worked at Moody’s CafĂ© in Fairfax before his twenty-year career with Missouri Beef Packers. 

In 1984, Sharon and he moved to Joplin, Missouri and Bill started employment with Tamko, retiring a second time in 2003, with nineteen years of service. Following Tamko, he did maintenance for the Carl Junction School District, retiring a third time in 2013. He also owned his own ornamental concrete business, Abbott Stepping Stone. He enjoyed traveling around to area craft fairs selling his one-of-a-kind creations. Bill was a member of Christ’s Church of Oronogo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, C.C. “Fat-Boy” Moody; two sons, Robert and Jeremy Abbott; and a brother, Larry Abbott.

Bill is survived by his wife, Sharon Abbott of the home; five children, Jeff Abbott and wife, Tonya, of Joplin, Julie Jones and husband, Randy, of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, Scott Abbott of Carthage, Christian Abbott and fiancé, Megan, of Pittsburg, Kansas and Destiny Abbott of Joplin; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a sister, Sharon Meyers and husband, Don, of Rock Port, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Diane Abbott also of Rock Port; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 19, 2021, at Christ’s Church of Oronogo with Jim Wickenkamp officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Weaver Cemetery. Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Rick Metsker, David Earhart, Dan McGrew, Alan Stanley, Peter Buckland, and Clifford Wert. The family will receive friends on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Memorials are being directed to Christ’s Church of Oronogo c/o the funeral home. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of the Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home in Webb City, Missouri.
