(From Parker Mortuary)Nelson Carl Williams, age 83 of Joplin, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Freeman West.
Nelson was born March 12, 1938 in Stotts City, Missouri, son of the late William Joseph Williams and Bernice Marie (Pauley) Williams. He grew up in Sarcoxie before serving in the United States Army for over 30 years.
While in the Army Nelson served 18 years overseas, including two tours of duty in Vietnam. He retired in 1985 with the rank of Sergeant Major. He then worked for the Joplin Family Y as Facility Supervisor until retiring again in 2000. He married Barbara Gail Smith on February 20, 1958 in Sarcoxie and after 35 years she preceded him in death on July 16, 1995.
Nelson could fix or build anything, he especially enjoyed woodworking. He was an avid reader, enjoyed fishing, tending to his garden and flowers and travel to see and explore new and exciting sights.
In addition to his parents and wife, Barbara, Nelson was preceded in death by two sons, Nelson Williams Jr. and David Williams; two brothers, Melvin Williams and Kenneth Williams; and a sister, Velma Williams.
Survivors include his children, Skyla Fiorentino (Steven) of Alba, Missouri, Kristie Williams of Joplin; son, Michael Williams of Fairland, Oklahoma; sisters, Carol Hall of Granby, Missouri, and Norma Cantu (Gary) of El Dorado, Kansas; his companion of the last 25 years, Ailene DeWelt of Joplin and her children, Rhonda Myers (Willie Kuehn) of Oronogo, Missouri, Kathy Frodge (Stephen) and Randy Foster (Melissa) all of Canyon Lake, Texas; daughter-in-law, Pam Williams; sister-in-law, Donna Henry; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Funeral service will be Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Alan McCamey officiating. The family will visit with friends following the service at Parker Mortuary.
He will be taken for cremation following the service with private burial of his ashes taking place at a later date in Stotts City.
