Carl Smith

Carl L. Smith, 84, of Fairland, OK departed his earthly life on February 23, 2017, at Freeman Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Carl was born to the late Bill and Edith (Wiley) Smith on December 22, 1932 in West Mineral, KS. Carl graduated from Cherokee High School, Cherokee, KS. That is where he met the love of his life; Shirley Satterly. On May 29, 1953 in Pittsburg, KS; Carl and Shirley were hitched, this was only the beginning of what would be 63 years of adventures.

Carl; a Veteran of the United States Air Force served his first eighteen-months in Okinawa during the Korean War. Carl was then able to come back to the states and be rejoined with his wife, taking her to Limestone, ME. In 1957 Carl’s time with the USAF was complete, and they decided it was time for a new adventure, they moved to Alaska. Carl and Shirley then moved to Choctaw, OK where they lived from 1964-1970. In 1970 it was time for another change; Carl and Shirley moved to Oronogo, MO where they had a large farm. Carl began working at Farmers Chemical while farming; he retired in 1995. Carl and Shirley settled in Fairland, OK where they enjoyed farming and Carl’s many other hobbies including airplanes, helicopters, fishing, and spending time with his family.

This beloved “ole’ man” leaves behind his “ole’ broad,” Shirley of the home; one daughter Susan Dale, Carl Junction, MO; one son Alan Smith and his wife Karen (Naylor) Smith of Neosho. Five grandchildren; Tiffany Tuggle, Carl Junction, MO; Sarah (Naylor) Tilford and husband Mike of Pineville, MO; Mason Smith, Carterville, MO; Glennis (Bub) Naylor II Neosho, MO; Shelby Smith Carterville, MO. Three great-grandchildren; Mackenzie Tuggle, Addison Tuggle, and Garret Tuggle all of Carl Junction, MO. Sister’s; Millie Dickerson of Joplin, MO; Linda and Ronnie Gibson of Webb City, MO; Sonnie Dooley of Joplin, MO; preceded in death by Wilma Davis. Brother-in-Law Larry and spouse Louise Satterly of Kansas City, MO. Carl was loved by many nieces and nephews as well as extended family and friends.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Crocker Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Monday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the donor’s choice.
