Clarence V.” Kes” Kester, 89, Carthage, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2017 in Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO. Clarence V. “Sonny” Kester was born February 5, 1928 in Carthage; a son of the late William Clarence Kester and Blanche Susan Keck Kester. He was a graduate of Carthage Senior High School, Class of 1946, where he was active in several school sports. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving with the 1st Calvary Division, during the occupation of Japan. Kes married Elizabeth Jean Brothers on June 6, 1952 in Cape Girardeau, MO; she survives. Kes was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, serving as an Elder. He was a telephone installer and repairman for Southwestern Bell for 40 years, retiring in 1987. He received the Rider Service Award from Southwestern Bell in 1985, served as a Carthage City Councilman for ten years, received the Carthage Chamber of Commerce “Citizen of the Year” award in 1975, inducted into the YMCA Hall of Fame, Class 2013 and was actively involved in the Carthage Little League for 20 years, taking the 12 year old little leaguers to five State Championship Titles.
Additional survivors include; William C. (Cari) Kester, Neosho, MO, Laura (Howard) South, Carthage and Patrick Curtis (Tami) Kester, Neosho, MO; one brother, Gale Kester, Carthage; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Kes was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Blanche Talley and Ruth Knight; six brothers, George, Ernest, Harry, Caroll, Dwight and Fred Kester.
Visitation will be held from 1:30 – 2:30 PM, Monday, February 20 at the Good Sheperd Lutheran Church, Carthage, followed by a memorial service at 2:30 PM. Pastor James Schnackenberg will officiate. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association in care of Knell Mortuary. Online condolences may be expressed through www.knellmortuary.com.
