Mary Pauline (Sisk) Vandergrift, age 94, of Carterville, Missouri, departed this world on February 19, 2017, on the wings of a snow white dove, to walk with her beloved husband of 73 years on fluffy, white clouds and streets paved with gold.
Mary was born February 19, 1923 in Licking, Missouri, to the late Utah and Virgie (Randall) Sisk. She graduated from Licking High School in 1939 and she was united in marriage to Ira L. Vandergrift on December 8, 1939.
She retired from Missouri Rehabilitation Hospital in Mt. Vernon, where she worked as a secretary for many years. Mary served as Den Mother for Cub Scouts Pack 21, President of the Jasper County PTA, a delegate to Missouri Congress of Parents and Teachers, Carterville School District Secretary and Carterville City Clerk. She also made uniforms for the high school band majorettes and practice pants for the football team. Mary was a member of Carterville United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Mary had many hobbies, including sewing, crocheting and taking care of her plants and flowers.
She will be greeted by her husband, Ira Vandergrift; her parents, Utah and Virgie Sisk; her sisters, Virginia Thole and Geraldine Westall; her brothers, Olen, Bob, Gerald, Herald, Steve, David and Myron Sisk; granddaughter, Cynthia Lopez; and great-granddaughter, Brittany Campbell.
Mary left behind her daughter, Virginia Modglin; sons, Marion Vandergrift, Jim Vandergrift and wife, Kay, Dan Vandergrift and wife, Mary, and John Vandergrift and wife, Helen; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Catherine Reynolds and husband, Don; and her brothers, Byron Sisk and wife, Linda, and Jackie Sisk.
Graveside services are 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2017, at Carterville Cemetery with Pastor Bob Wynne officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carterville Cemetery in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home, Webb City, Missouri.
