Frederick Olen Reding, age 98, Joplin, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017 at his daughter's home in Ava, Missouri after a sudden illness.
Olen was born November 22, 1918 in Joplin, son of the late Chester Arthur Reding and Helen E. Bruton Reding. He graduated from Joplin High School where he was the band's Drum Major. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked for Sperry-Rand-Vickers Inc. for nearly 30 years before retiring. He was an active member of South Joplin Christian Church for years, and most recently Gainesville First Christian Church. Olen was a founding board member and volunteer with Crosslines of Joplin, was a board member of the Joplin Historical Society, the N.R.A., and was a longtime volunteer with Mercy, and the Prestige Program at Mercy.
In addition to his parents, Olen was preceded in death by a brother, Chester L. Reding.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Gladys Creech Reding; daughter, Ann E. Shields and husband John of Squires, Missouri; grandchildren, John W. Hampton, II of Webb City, Missouri, Lieutenant Diane M. Hampton and wife Patricia of Fort Worth, Texas, Karen Lee Smith and husband Robert of Pawnee, Oklahoma; eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Robert Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery with family serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Friday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Crosslines of Joplin.
