Mildred Nadine Hackney Brown, age 98, Joplin, passed away on Friday, February 10, 2017 after a sudden illness.
Mildred was born October 18, 1918 in Vernon County, Missouri, daughter of the late Tilman Hackney and Maude West Hackney. She grew up in Vernon County, and graduated from Nevada High School. She was always independent, and moved to the Chicago area in 1943 where she became the first female to be allowed in the Meat Cutters Union, she then moved to California where she was one of the original "Rosie the Riveters" working on B-17 and B-29's during World War II. She returned to Missouri in 1946 after World War II. She was a member of Royal Heights United Methodist Church.
She was the consummate daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She was never too busy to take care of her family, they always came first.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death her loving husband, Newton W. Brown; grandson, Evan Nickolas Pitts; brother, Hubert Hackney; parents in law, A.J. and Rhoda Ellen Brown; other family, Crawford, Max, Iona, Mary, Nancy and Kathryn.
Survivors include her children, Marilyn Pitts and husband Nickolas of Fairbanks, Alaska, R. Neal Brown and wife Diane of Merryville, Missouri; grandchildren, Ryan Neal Pitts and wife Lauretta, Autumn Pitts, Amber Pitts, Christopher Brown and wife Katie, Nickolas Brown; great-grandchildren, Allan Hopper, Joshua Hopper, Laura Minta and wife Dakota, Brittanne Fiscus, Faith Gibson, Todd Gibson, Natalie Brown, and Lincoln Brown; great-great-grandchildren, Jailynn Minta, Lilyanne Gibson, and Vontessa Gibson; a host of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
