Jerry Allen Steele, age 78, of Joplin, passed away on Wednesday February 1, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Jerry was born on February 26, 1938, the son of the late Frank and Ruth (Laughridge) Steele. He served in the United States Army 101st Airborne. He married Dorothy Allen Steele on April 26, 1957, together they raised two children. He was employed as the Vice President of Maintenance at Tri-State Motor Transit in Joplin before becoming the Vice-President of Sales at Ridewell in Springfield, Mo. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Jerry enjoyed golfing, and working in his yard, landscaping and gardening. He had a warm, inviting personality, he never met a stranger and had a way of making others feel special. He truly cared about people.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Dorothy Steele, Joplin; one son, Scott Steele, Joplin; one daughter, Leigh Saxon and husband Terrill, Hewitt, Tx.; two brothers, Don Steele and wife Kay, of Virginia, and Johnny Steele, of South Carolina; and two grandchildren, Jack Saxon and Whit Saxon. He was preceded in death by a son Jack; a grandson, Paul Saxon; a brother, Phillip Steele; and a sister, Ann Steele.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, 4128 S. Connecticut. Reverend Jamie Tickle will officiate. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Monday, prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be given to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital for Cancer Research in care of the mortuary.
