Ted B. Evans Sr. Ted made his last road trip from Carthage on March 7, 2014 to a heavenly home, where he will meet many friends and family. He will be there waiting for us all.
Ted was born on September 15, 1934 in Joplin, Missouri. Ted was the son of Ramon A. Evans and Dorothy Elizabeth (Beatty) Evans. Ted attended grade school in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, moving to Carthage with his parents in May 1947. He attended 8th grade at Hawthorne School and graduated from Carthage High School in 1952. Ted was the director of the CHS Band and Pep Band. He graduated in 1956 from Westminster College, Fulton, Mo, with a Liberal Art Degree, where Ted formed and directed the band. He also received a music scholarship to Tulsa University. Ted joined the Sigma Chi Fraternity and attended Sigma Chi leadership school in 1954 at Hanover College, Indiana. Ted married Helen Daphne Cornell (Dottie) on August 27, 1955 in Carthage, Missouri. She preceded him in death on April 4, 1998 after 43 years of marriage. He then married Earlene (Mayhew) Moriondo on November 25, 2000, she survives.
Ted entered the US Army Infantry as a 2nd Lt. at Fort Benning, GA, Officer’s School. After graduation, 1st Lt. Evans was transferred to Fort Carson Colorado to the 9th Division, 47th Infantry Battalion, M Company Heavy Weapons Co, then to Headquarters, Co, training troops for Korea 1956-1958. After active duty Ted joined the Army Reserve in 1958, and was company Commander of Military Police, in Pittsburg, Kansas. Ted then joined Headquarters Company 203rd Armor Ba in Joplin, where he became Captain Evans, Headquarters Company Commander and one year later became Battalion S-3 of 203rd Armor. On 1965 he resigned from the National Guard to continue his banking career. Ted graduated in 1965 from the Graduate School of Banking, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI. He started his banking career in college, working in all teller positions in the summer. After college and his military service, he started as an assistant trust officer in 1958, and was assistant Vice President in 1963 of Central National Bank, Carthage, Mo. In 1965 he was promoted to Vice President, and in 1969 promoted to Executive Vice President. In January 1970 Ted was promoted to President of Central National Bank of Carthage. In 1970 CNB was purchased by United Missouri Bank of Kansas City, MO, and became the United Missouri Bank of Carthage. Ted became the President of UMB of Carthage. He was put on the Board of Directors of UMB of Carthage in 1970. In 1972, Ted was made president and chairman of the board at UMB. In 1973 he was put on the Board of Directors at UMB of Kansas City, “The Holding Company.” Ted resigned in 1981 to retire and travel. However, in late 1981 he joined the Bank of Jasper and became president and board member, worked two years, and resigned a second time to travel in 1983. He joined SMB of Carthage as Public Relations for two years. Ted again retired to travel and see the world in 1985 where he criss-crossed the USA seven times, toured all of Canada, Alaska, part of Mexico, and England.
Ted was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage since 1950. He was president of the Carthage Chamber of Commerce, and President of the Carthage Rotary Club. Ted helped to promote Rotary Plays for years, raising money for Carthage Charities from the sale of tickets. He was President of Jasper County Development and President of Prosperity Lake Association. Ted was an original Board of Directors and Building Committee member of the St. Luke’s Nursing Center, Carthage. He was also President of the Missouri Jr. Bankers Association, and Governor’s committee on community affairs. Ted helped to build UMB bank and the motor bank. Ted was on many committees of the Missouri Bankers Association.
Ted was preceded in death by his wife Dottie, his parents, Ramon A. Evans, and Dorothy Evans, and one brother Ramon Griffith Evans. Ted is survived by three children of Ted and Dottie Evans. Ted (Debra) Evans Jr., Pam (Mike) Robertson, and Carolyn Evans; nine grandchildren Mike (Lotoyia) Robertson Jr., Melissa (Bill) Stremke, Sabrina (Andy) Lynch, Ryan Robertson, Kirsten Robertson, David and Sarah Evans and Justin (Dallas), and Allison Peternell; seven great-grandchildren Cambry and Ashlyn Erdman, Carson Stremke, Tristan, Trenton, Peyton Lynch, and Jax Peternell; three step-children Larry (Rita) Moriondo, Theresa Moriondo, Cynthia Renkoski; and eight step-grandchildren Elizabeth, Joe, and Mark Moriondo, Bethany Treacy, Emma, Jonell, and Joseph Kreueger. Additional survivors include Harry Mack Cornell Jr., Sharon (Lance) Beshore, Cynthia Cornell, and Shirley Cornell. Ted loved the military and his country and almost stayed in the military as a full time Regular Army Officer. He had a difficult time deciding between careers in Banking, Military, and Music. He loved each one of them. Ted also had a love for golf and traveling with his wife Earlene. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at the Ulmer Funeral Home. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014 at the Ulmer Funeral Home. Burial will be at Park Cemetery. Online condolences can be made at www.ulmerfh.com.
