John M. Swab, Jr., age 88, Joplin, passed away at 11:55 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014 at a local nursing center after an illness.
John was born October 8, 1925 in Washington, Kansas to the late John and Essie Swab and had lived in Joplin most of his life.
He owned and operated John’s IGA on North Main Street in Joplin for 45 years. He then opened John’s Market on Broadway Street and operated that location for the next 12 years. John was a longtime member of Duenweg Baptist Church. He was also a licensed pilot and loved to fly and owned several airplanes over the years. John was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps.
He married Eileen Scott on May 14, 1946 in Columbus, Kansas. She survives at the home.
Additional survivors include his children, Jana Lee Collard, St. Louis, Missouri, John Swab, Joplin, Diane Thomas and her husband, Eric, Newport Beach, California, Mark Swab and his wife, Tammy, Joplin, Celia Swab, Gilroy, California; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Swab and a sister, Pauline Heil of California.
Services are planned for Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Greg Gooch will officiate. Interment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Eric Thomas, Brian Naegar, Ryan Swab, Eric Altman, Scotty Roberson and Kevin Swab will serve as pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to Duenweg Baptist Church, in care of Parker Mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
