Marilyn McKinney, age 81, Diamond, passed away at 3:55 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Freeman Hospital after an illness.
Marilyn was born August 17, 1932 in Aurora, Missouri to the late William Asbury Lawson and Velma May Drake Lawson and had lived in Joplin all of her life.
She worked as an operator for several years before she started her career with Motorola. Marilyn retired from Motorola in 1992 after 18 years of service. She then worked at the 15th Street Wal-Mart as a greeter. She was known to everyone as the ‘Wal-Mart Lady’.
Marilyn was a faithful member of Fellowship Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing Bingo and crocheting. One of her favorite past times was to collect Christmas decorations and ornaments. She had accumulated so many, her family had to continuously build more storage space.
She married Maurice McKinney on March 20, 1953 in Joplin. He preceded her in death on November 3, 2008.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Wilda Russell; one brother, Ralph Lawson and siblings, Roger and Sharon Lawson.
Survivors include a son, Don McKinney and his wife, Donna, Diamond; a daughter, Teri Pugh and her husband, Bill, Diamond; grandchildren, Shannon Rainwater, Natasha Rainwater, Justin Rainwater, Haley Pugh, Abby Pugh; great grandchildren, Gabe Faul, Austin Rainwater, Caylor Bilke, Noah Rainwater; and one sister, Jean Beaver, State of Georgia.
Graveside services are planned for Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Stone Cemetery, East of Joplin. Rex Wakefield will officiate. Pallbearers will be Don McKinney, Bill Pugh, Bryan Russell, Ralph Lawson, Jr., Patrick McKinney and Chet Morton. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-7:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to Fellowship Baptist Church.
