Joe Jeffers, Sr., age 79, Joplin, passed away at 3:16 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at his residence after a sudden illness.
Joe was born November 24, 1934 in Joplin to the late Walter Jeffers and Grace Huddleston Jeffers and had lived in the Joplin area most of his life.
He worked in construction for Ellis Construction Company for 11 years and had also worked at Able Body, Inc. for several years.
Joe was a veteran of the United States Navy and served in the Korean War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Occupation Service Medal.
He married Judith Ann Martin on September 9, 1990 in Joplin. She preceded him in death on February 12, 2009.
Joe was also preceded by a son, Steven Jeffers and a brother, Jack Jeffers.
He is survived by two brothers, Theodore ‘Ted’ Jeffers, Joplin, Don Jeffers and his wife, Ellen, Independence, Missouri; one sister, Faye ‘Christine’ Hunt, Ottawa, Kansas; two daughters, Letha Jeffers, Belton, Missouri, Debbie Jeffers; two step sons, Billy David Tate and Michael Leon Tate, both of Joplin; several grandchildren, including Christopher Lee Tate and Joseph Leighman Tate; several great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
Services are planned for Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Interment will follow at Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Geoff Jeffers, Brock Jeffers, Kaleb Jeffers, David Jeffers, Roger Martin and Larry Jeffers. Military honors will be provided at the cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6-7:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the Joplin Association for the Blind.
