Hazel Virginia Allen, age 86, Joplin, passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Spring River Christian Village.
Hazel was born September 13, 1927 in Ogden, Arkansas, daughter of the late Patrick Roberson and Ella Keele Roberson. Hazel graduated from High School in Ashdown, Arkansas, and moved to Joplin shortly after graduating. She had her own catering business in Joplin, and was active in the community.
She was an active member of Unity Baptist Church where she worked with the youth choir, sang in the adult choir, and taught Sunday school for many years. She worked with Meals on Wheels, was a volunteer with the Joplin Blind Association, and volunteered her services at Spring River Christian Village. She was a member of the George Washington Carver Historical Society, and was on the board of the George Washington Carver Nursery. Hazel was also a member of the NAACP.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Allen, Jr. who passed away December 18, 1970, and six brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her children, Gale Allen and wife Jo of Bull Head City, Arizona, and Judith Wilson and husband Melvin of Grandview, Missouri; grandchildren, Marissa Parson and husband Jason of Kansas City, Missouri, and Marcus Wilson and wife Jennifer of Las Vegas, Nevada; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Rufus L. Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in Osborne Memorial Cemetery with Melvin Wilson, Jason Parson, Marcus Wilson, John Banks, Gary Johnson and Teddy Johnson serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be Wednesday from Noon until service time.
