June Blalock

Mrs. June Adair Maddy Blalock, of Joplin, Missouri, departed this life on March 9, 2014, at her residence after a recent decline in health.

June entered this life on June 30, 1917 in Joplin, Missouri, born to the union of the late James Nicholas and Lillian (Dudley) Maddy. She graduated from Joplin High School in 1934, earned an associate’s degree in 1969, a bachelor’s degree in management technology in 1976 and a bachelor’s degree in computer science in 1986 from Missouri Southern State College. She was united in marriage to Paul Blalock on July 30, 1962 and he preceded her four short years later in 1966. She was employed by Safeway Stores, Inc. from 1937 to 1984, serving as district secretary for ten district managers.

She was active in a number of organizations including a 54-year member of Azotus White Shrine of Jerusalem, Ruth Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, The Pilot Club Joplin and The Mable Hobson Draper Cancer Aid Association, Visions Unlimited—a Senior Citizens Group at MSSU, and a volunteer at Crosslines Ministries.

Also, she was a life-member of the Lantern Society of MSSU, the American Association of University Women, the Dorethea B. Hoonver Foundation and the Joplin Museum Complex serving ten years as volunteering secretary to the Advisory Board of The Everet J. Ritchey Tri-State Mineral Museum.

As a member of The First Community Church of Christ serving six years on the church board, a member of the Adult Forum Sunday School Class and the Womens’ Alliance of the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Dorothy Jean Maddy.

June is survived by a host of cousins, Dorothy King and husband, William, of Brownsville, Texas, Robert Dudley and wife, Charlene, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Julia Dudley of LaFeria, Texas, Mary Ellen Todd of Canton, Missouri and Dr. Robert Blalock of Marshall, Missouri; a dear friend, Atalie Lebedeff of Westtown, New York; and her adopted family and caregivers, James and Valorie McGaugh of Joplin, Missouri.

Funeral services for Mrs. Blalock were held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2014 in the Chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri with Dr. Craig Tally and Richard Massa officiating. Burial followed in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City, Missouri. No formal visitation was held. In lieu of flowers, memorials are being directed to the First Community Church of Joplin and contributions may be left at the mortuary.
