David L. Carlton, age 75, Joplin, passed away Sunday September 4, 2016. David was born September 13, 1940 in Pittsburg, Kansas.
He is preceded in death by his father, Harold V. Carlton, and his mother, Margaret Joyce Carlton, one brother, Tex Carlton, Sapulpa OK., two sisters, Vera Marie Carlton and Margaret J. Deplue, Frontenac, KS.
David is survived by his wife of 57 years Karen K. Carlton (Wickware) and children, John Gregory D. Carlton, David Lee Carlton II, Travis Hale Carlton and Kelly K. Kellenberger. 7 granddaughters, 5 grandsons and 1 great granddaughter, all of which were his pride and joy. Three sisters, Theresa Marie Bruffy, Joplin, MO., JoAnn Krainz, Osage, MO. and Judith Ann Cronister, Topeka, KS.
David graduated from St. Mary’s-Colgan High School in Pittsburg, Kansas in 1958. He was an outstanding athlete receiving many awards for his achievements in football, basketball and baseball. He influenced many young lives in the Joplin Community by coaching YMCA Football and Little League Baseball. “Coach Carlton” was a great role model for young men as he taught the values of sportsmanship, hard work and respect for one another. He was always a positive influence with his players and he provided encouragement and genuine respect for everyone.
David joined the Joplin Police Department in 1962 as a patrolman and he was promoted to Detective in 1969. He received many awards and recognition for his devotion and community service.
He left the Police Department to serve as an Investigator for the Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. In 1996, David went to work for the Missouri Department of Revenue Criminal Investigation Bureau. David retired in 2006 and enjoyed many hours with his children and grandchildren.
David had a great love for music and enjoyed spending many hours playing records with family and friends. He also appreciated antique furniture and restored many pieces for his family members.
David was an avid quail hunter and he raised and trained several birddogs. He enjoyed many hunting seasons hunting with his sons. Some of his sons’ best memories are quail hunting escapades with their dad.
David was a member St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church of Joplin, the National Rifle Association and the Missouri State Investigators Association.
Memorial Funeral Mass will be Friday, September 9, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church with Father J. Friedel officiating.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Thursday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church Building Fund.
