Evelyn Shockey

Evelyn B. Shockey, age 97, of Carthage, formerly of Lamar, Missouri, passed away Thursday, September 15, 2016, at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin.

Evelyn was born March 2, 1919, in Lakin, Kansas, second of the five children of George and Pauline (Brach) Riffel. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Edwin, Ray, and Harlan Riffel; and her sister, Ella Mae Kline.

After graduating from Lakin High School, Evelyn went to work for Drs. V. Mae and Norman Leopold, later moving with them to Odessa, Texas. There she met Hershel Shockey and they were married May 1, 1940. As newlyweds, they moved to Kansas City where Hershel finished medical school and Evelyn worked with Drs. J.L. and Margaret Jones. After his graduation they moved to Galena, Missouri for two years, then to Greenfield, Missouri for two and a half years, later settling in Harrah, Oklahoma for 35 years.

In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Evelyn assisted Hershel in his medical practice and was a talented seamstress. After moving to Barton County, Missouri in 1980, they became active members of Grace Episcopal Church in Carthage where she was involved in St. Martha’s Guild. After sharing 53 years of life together, Hershel preceded Evelyn in death on May 11, 1993. Remaining active, she enjoyed the fellowship of good friends in Lamar Country Club, several bridge clubs, the Wednesday Reading Club, and Chapter EP, P.E.O.

Survivors include two daughters, Paula (Gary) Dumm of rural Jasper, Missouri, and Sharon (Bill) Quigley of Richardson, Texas; a son, Phil (Carolyn) Shockey, of Norman, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, Christopher W. Dumm, Matthew P. Dumm, Elizabeth D. Dumm, Heather J. Quigley Berryhill, Douglas A. Quigley, N. Colleen Quigley McCord, Aaron M. Shockey, and Amanda C. Shockey Porter; 15 great-grandchildren; and a large extended family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 21st at Grace Episcopal Church in Carthage followed by entombment in Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 20th at Daniel Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Grace Episcopal Church or Oklahoma Educational Foundation for Osteopathic Medicine, in care of the funeral home.
