Don Alps

Mr. Donald Ray “Don” Alps, 73, of Pineville, Missouri, departed this life on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, at the McDonald County Living Center after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Don entered this life on October 6, 1942, in Longmont, Colorado, son of the late Harold and Ava (Enyeart) Alps. He was raised and attended school in Estes Park, Colorado. His father operated a horse livery stable and at a young age Don would lead tourists on trail rides. In 1960 he enlisted in the United States Armed Forces, serving four years in the Navy. After being honorably discharged in 1964, he returned to Colorado to Aspen and was employed by Aspen Ski Corporation as a ski instructor. In the mid 1960’s he owned and operated Alpine Janitorial Service, Tecnacraft “Aspen Leaf Jewelry” and a sign shop. He also managed the Water Wheel Motel and delivered freight for Miller Brothers, all of this while attending CSU and Northeastern Junior College. He served as an officer with the Boulder Police Department before moving to Joplin, Missouri, in 1973. He rose to rank of Sergeant with the Joplin Police Department. He moved back to Colorado in 1977 and took the position as Security Manager at Fort St. Vrain Nuclear Power Plant. From 1981 to 1991 he worked for the Denver Broncos in their video and photography department, working long weekends, witnessing three Super Bowls and traveling with the team to games in Japan and London. On December 9, 1977, in Longmont, Colorado, he was united in marriage to Shirley “Sam” Morgan and together they have shared the last thirty-eight years. In June of 1993, he and Sam moved to Glen Rose, Texas, and Don became Security Manager of Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant. After retiring in January of 2009, they moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas, where Don spent his time fishing and playing golf. They have resided in Pineville, Missouri, since May of 2014.

Don is survived by his wife, Shirley “Sam” (Morgan) Harris Alps of the home; four children, Dylene Mcymraes and husband, Earl, of Fairfield, Iowa, Wendy Beman Alps of Johnstown, Colorado, Carrie Brock and husband, Todd, of Wewoka, Oklahoma and Christopher Harris and wife, Christy of Alvin, Texas; a brother, Dr. James Scott of Anchorage, Alaska; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; as well as a host of other family and friends.



Memorial services for Mr. Alps are 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 30, 2016, in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes with Pastor Debbie Alumbaugh officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Pineville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are being directed to the Pineville Cemetery Care Fund and contributions may be left at the funeral home.
